Different Types of Blueberries for Making Juice
In the Netherlands, you generally come across two different types of blueberries: one primarily found in stores, and the other in the wild. Both types of blueberries are quite healthy, but there are differences. The larger, rounder berries usually available in stores under the name ‘blueberries’ are the fruits of Vaccinium corymbosum. These grow in the wild, including in the United States, but not in our region. Nevertheless, they are cultivated extensively due to their cluster growth pattern and easy picking. They have light flesh and a soft, sweet taste. You can purchase them year-round, sometimes from the frozen food section. Even frozen, these blueberries retain their health benefits. The blueberry you can pick in the wild in the Netherlands is a different variety, originating from Vaccinium myrtillus. They don’t grow in clusters; the berries are spaced apart and slightly smaller. They have dark purple flesh and a more tart and tangy taste. You can pick them in the wild between April and June, and sometimes later in the (early) summer. The following blueberry juice recipes can be made with both types of blueberries.
Blueberry Juice Recipe
This delectable deep purple juice combines (wild) blueberries with (wild) blackberries, purple beetroot, and a hint of lemon. During spring and (early) summer, you can pick wild blueberries and blackberries yourself. It’s a fun way to enjoy a beautiful day, and it’s free! Opt for berries and blackberries that have a dark blue or purple color, feel slightly soft, and easily detach from the stem. Wild fruits are often rich in healthy nutrients. When out of season, you can also choose blueberries and blackberries from the store, possibly in frozen form. Properly frozen, they should retain most of their freshness and nutrients. Frozen fruits are often more budget-friendly as well. Of course, you’ll need to thaw them before juicing.
Ingredients per serving:
- 2 handfuls of (wild) blackberries
- 1 purple beetroot with stems
- 1 handful of (wild) blackberry leaves
- 1 handful of (wild) blueberries
- 1/4 lemon
- 1 lemon wedge (peel included)
Preparation:
- Wash the blackberries thoroughly and juice them in the slow juicer.
- Scrub and wash the beetroot thoroughly, then cut it into wedges. Juice it, including the stems, in the slow juicer.
- Wash the blackberry leaves and juice them in the slow juicer.
- Wash the blueberries and juice them in the slow juicer.
- Juice the lemon without its peel, but with the white pith, in the slow juicer.
- Finally, juice the lemon peel in the slow juicer as well.
Wild Blueberry Juice Recipe
This blueberry juice with cabbage, plums, carrots, and aloe vera supports your immune system due to its high vitamin C content, among other benefits. Let yourself be surprised by this exciting combination of ingredients! You can pick the berries in the woods or buy them in the store. Use aloe vera from your own plant (be sure to follow instructions carefully).
Ingredients per serving:
- 2 handfuls of purple pointed cabbage
- 2 carrots
- 1 handful of blueberries
- 1 blue plum
- 1/4 stalk of aloe vera
Preparation:
- Remove the outer leaves of the pointed cabbage and discard them. Chop the cabbage finely and juice it in the slow juicer.
- Trim the ends of the carrots, cut them into small pieces, and juice them in the slow juicer.
- Wash the blueberries and juice them in the slow juicer.
- Remove the pit from the plum and juice it in the slow juicer.
- Completely remove the green skin from the aloe vera, leaving only the white, gel-like interior, and juice it in the slow juicer. Note: Remove the skin carefully, as aloe vera skin is toxic for consumption!
Consume your juice right after juicing for maximum freshness and nutrient content. If you’re making larger quantities for convenience, you can freeze any leftovers.
