What is blueberry juice made of?
There are different types of blueberries. Here, we’ll discuss two of them, each with its own advantages. Both types of berries make a delicious and healthy snack or a great addition to your breakfast. By drinking blueberry juice, you can easily get many of the beneficial nutrients from blueberries. The larger, rounder berries that you can usually buy in stores under the name “blueberries” are the fruits of Vaccinium corymbosum. These blueberries are also known as highbush blueberries because they grow on bushes. This makes them easy to pick. This type of blueberry is widely cultivated, including in our own country. In North America, this species grows in the wild, but not in Europe. You can often buy them in the Netherlands throughout the year, possibly in frozen form. Even then, these blueberries are still healthy.
Picking wild blueberries
The wild blueberry that you can also pick in the wild in the Netherlands is a different type of berry, originating from Vaccinium myrtillus. This wild berry is slightly smaller and does not grow in clusters like blueberries. While blueberries have light flesh, wild blueberries have dark purple flesh, giving the juice a much darker color. Blueberries are also known for their soft, sweet taste, while wild blueberries often taste slightly more sour or astringent. You can pick European wild blueberries in the wild between April and June, and sometimes there is a second blooming period later in the year. Wild berries, in general, are very rich in nutrients. That’s why we, for example, made our Antioxidant shot with mainly wild-picked berries.

Antioxidants in blueberry juice
Blueberry juice is one of the richest sources of antioxidants you can find. It contains various types of antioxidants, including vitamins C and E. Antioxidants are nutrients that combat free radicals, which can damage your body’s cells. As a result, antioxidants can help protect your body against oxidative damage, such as from sunlight or air pollution. Anthocyanins, quercetin, and resveratrol are also present in these healthy berries.
Blueberry juice vs. other types of berry juice
According to scientific studies (1), most types of berry juice are relatively rich in antioxidants. However, compared to other types of berries, blueberry juice scores the highest, as shown in a Chinese study (2) that compared blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries based on their antioxidant value.
The science behind blueberry juice
Over the years, much scientific research has been conducted on the health benefits of blueberry juice, with a focus on the action of its antioxidants. As part of a British study (3) investigating the protective effects of antioxidants in fruits, 168 healthy participants drank a liter of fruit juice made from apple juice and blueberry juice for four weeks. The researchers paid particular attention to the antioxidant ascorbic acid (vitamin C). This study found that the antioxidants in this fruit juice helped protect the participants against damage caused by free radicals. Another small-scale study (4) confirmed the protective effect of blueberry juice against oxidative damage.
